This protagonist wears a party hat and parades his bracelet of charms: an act of celebration filled with irony and impossibility. The golden crown, a sign of victory, has been won at some expense. It seems the mementos of childhood that he pulls along are shadowed icons, spiritually if not physically weighted (although a fishing weight does appear on the ring). Among the objects are a small book with the title inscribed within, a child swing, an adult swing and an empty pail. There comes a time when even the gentlest soul engages in a battle of the spirit. I present “Elephant on Parade”, who has gone on such a journey and returned elevated and slightly detached from his surroundings. At a point somewhere between heaven and earth, where neither place is home or perhaps both, our charioteer has landed and the boundary between the real and the unreal has been lifted. Inspired by Dumbo’s intoxication dream, it is a sculpture about transcending one’s limits. With a startled yet knowing expression and the awkwardness of a homemade toy, this creature celebrates his victory with élan. His baggage is twofold: those ears which he bears from birth and the carriage which carries the transport he has picked up along the way. But now both are partially illuminated, with golden leather. For when a fear is faced head on, a portal to light opens and everything is affected, including our baggage. A journey of the soul is taken with all bags packed. For a little while you’re a guest in a world that spins on its own axis. You’re carried away physically, your view is blurred, and your imagination is propelled into that inner world of its own making. I can remember an early carousel where there were gold rings to catch, actually pull, from a machine while orbiting the playful galaxy. An old dispensary it was, already a relic from a time gone by. It was not an easy reach so not everyone could do it. The passengers on this particular carousel are of fragile makeup. But their delicacy does not hinder the journey. Instead, they become more heroic for participating. As arbiters of valor and charm, precariously perched, suspended, they ride. It is about honoring the value of the past and staying true to who you are. The leather straps that bind the goose were found in an old carriage house in lower Manhattan and could easily be a hundred years old, along with the wooden wheels. It would be hard to find another wooden platform of this size, as trees don’t grow so large here anymore. The goose bears the gilded trappings of beauty and paints herself as a swan. Her limitations are obvious; her efforts sincere.
